Disaster Services Open House/Q&A

April 3, 2009

Nicole Valentine, Director of Emergency Services/Public Affairs of the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts provides an overview of the services that the ARC can provide in various emergency situations.

WRMRC Coordinator Shawn Winsor discusses how area Medical Reserve Corp volunteers responded to shelters during the Ice Storm.

Chris Montiverdi, Program Manager, Office of Health & Medical Preparedness, Worcester Division of Public Health presents some statistics and outcomes of responses to the Ice Storm.

Suzanne Billings, Coordinator of Preparedness & Response for the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts emphasizes the importance of up dated emergency plans.

Michael Dunne, Homeland Security Liaison, Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission discusses the role of Homeland Security in emergency preparations.

Attendees at the Open House include Emergency Managers, Fire Officers, local Public Health officials, members of MRCs, as well as MEMA and FEMA representatives.

Informational session geared towards Emergency Managers, Public Health Directors and Towns Administrators. Topics include:   Shelter Operations~ What’s My Role?, Free Shelter Trainings available to your town, Disaster Planning with the Red Cross, The role of your local Medical Reserve Corps, Overview of “lessons learned” from the 2008 New England Ice Storm.

WRMRC Volunteers joined doctors, medical students and nurses from UMass Medical Center and Worcester Health & Human Services to provide staffing for a combined flu clinic and EDS drill.  More than 1000 inoculations were given at the Senior Center and through a mobile outreach program.
